The Root Chakra – Muladhara

The Root Chakra – Muladhara

There is so much information about the chakras, this is just a short overview of the basic ideas. I hope it will spark an interest for you to look further into this energetic system to help you energetically, emotionally and physically.

The root chakra is the first of the seven chakras located at the base of the spine at the tailbone in the back and the pubic bone in the front. This is the root of your being and responsible for your sense of safety and security on earth. The word Muladhara is two Sanskrit words: Mula meaning “root” and Adhara, which means “support” or “base.”

The primary drive of the root chakra is survival and security.  This includes your basic needs such as food, water, shelter, and safety, as well as your emotional safety and survival.  This chakra is deeply connected to Mother Earth and provides you with the ability to be grounded and supported on the earth plane. When these needs are met, you feel grounded and safe, and you tend to worry less day to day.

Often how secure you feel in your life now has a lot to do with how safe you felt as a small. This is similar to psychologist Erik Erickson’s stages of development, the first stage “trust versus mistrust” is related to your root chakra development. For instance if your caregivers took care of you and gave you want you needed with consistency, you learned to feel secure in the world.  But if your caregivers were not able to consistently give you what you needed, you may have developed some blockages in your first chakra and /or some mistrust in the world.

Consciousness in this chakra is mainly concerned with survival. It is our fight or flight response, our natural instincts, and our need for feeling safety in the world. Ignoring this chakra or its elements makes us feel that our survival in our personal life or in society as a whole is threatened. During these past two months when we have been spenting more time at home I have been able to pay attention to the elements of this chakra. I have been doing root chakra yoga, getting my home in order, looking at getting my finances in order, and overall trying to energetically plant my roots in a different way. I want to feel more rooted with a sense of stability for this new lifestyle how ever that may unfold.

The primary condition of imbalance in this chakra is a feeling of insecurity. If your basic needs are not met it can be very difficult to focus on anything else. That is one reason why it is so important to have adequate food, clothing, and shelter for everyone. Of course the needs are different for each person and you must decide for yourself what you need to feel secure. Remember this chakra is the root, and base for all of the other chakras so we want to keep this first chakra in balance in order for the rest of the system to be in balance. Fear and anxiety can be a clue that your root chakra is needing some attention. Learning how to ground yourself physically and energetically is important. Grounding can be anything that connects you to the present moment like consciously taking a few deep breaths inhaling for 4 seconds and pausing for a moment before you exhale for 4 seconds then pause, repeat this pattern 4 or more times.

Here are some tips for balancing you first chakra:

Activities that connect you to the earth or being in nature such as hiking, walking barefoot, gardening, being outside in a park, whatever connects you to the earth.

Yoga can be done to help you ground and balance yourself.

Meditation and breathing exercises.

This is a grounding meditation you can try.

Sit in a comfortable position and imagine a grounding cord that runs from the bottom of your spine deep into the earth. Imagine that this cord grounds you energetically to Mother Earth. In your minds eye see this grounding cord like the roots of a large stable tree. Now imagine that you can draw energy up from the earth and also dissipate excessive mental energy through this cord back down into the earth. Breath deeply as you center yourself and feel the strength of being energetically connected and grounded.
